Sometimes the best thing on a lot is the space under the old building. A collapsing garage, a shed past saving or a house too far gone to remodel can all come down to make room for something new.
Elevated Dirt Works handles residential demolition for homeowners and builders across Missoula, Lolo and the Bitterroot. We take down garages, sheds, outbuildings and small houses, remove old foundations and slabs, and clear the way for additions. Our compact excavators and tracked skid steer are the right size for city lots and backyards, where a full-size machine would damage everything around it.
Demo is rarely the end of the job. Once the building is gone, the site usually needs backfill, grading and a new foundation dig. We can do all of it without another contractor lining up behind us.

How It Works

We look at the structure, access and anything nearby that has to be protected.
- Utilities and permits
You arrange utility disconnects, and we confirm any permits the job needs.
- Demolition
We take the structure down in a controlled order and sort debris as we go.
- Haul-off
Debris is loaded and hauled away.
- Backfill and grade
Holes and basements get filled and compacted, and the lot is graded.
From Tear-Down to Buildable Lot
Utility disconnects come first. Power, gas, water and sewer need to be disconnected before the building comes down. That's arranged with each utility, and it can take some lead time, so start early. We won't start demo until the lines are confirmed off. We also call Montana811 before digging out foundations.
Permits and old materials. Many demolitions need a permit from the city or county. Older buildings can contain materials that need testing before demo. Check with the local building office about what applies to your project, and we'll work within it.
Tight sites. In town, the building you're removing is often a few feet from a house, a fence or a neighbor's garage. Partial demo for an addition is even tighter. We take things apart in an order that keeps debris falling where we want it, and we use smaller equipment that can work close without collateral damage.
Haul-off. Debris gets loaded and hauled off site. Clean fill and concrete may be handled differently than mixed debris.
Backfill and grade. An old basement or crawlspace becomes a hole that has to be filled and compacted, not just pushed in. If the next step is a new foundation, we leave the ground ready for it. If the lot is staying empty for a while, we grade it to drain and leave it clean, so it doesn't turn into a mud hole or a weed patch while you plan.

Who disconnects the utilities?
The utilities do. You or your builder arrange disconnects with the power, gas, water and sewer providers before demo. We'll tell you what to ask for.
Can you take down part of a building for an addition?
Yes. Partial demo on tight sites is work we do for builders. Caleb Kasper of Brome Design Build praised our work on a tight site for his team's big addition.
Do you haul everything away?
Yes. Debris removal is part of the job, and we leave the lot backfilled and graded.
