Buried lines are easy to forget until one freezes, leaks or backs up. Then the whole yard comes apart to find the problem. Doing the trench right the first time is cheap insurance.
Elevated Dirt Works digs and installs waterlines, sewer services and utility trenches for homeowners and builders around Missoula, Lolo and the Bitterroot. That includes new service lines for a house under construction, a water line out to a shop or barn, sewer from the house to a septic tank, and replacing old lines that have failed.
We use compact excavators, which fit through gates and along the side of an existing house without tearing up more yard than the trench needs. Where the line ties into a city main or a public system, we work with the utility and your plumber on the connection.

How It Works
- Free on-site estimate
We walk the route from start to finish and look for obstacles.
- Locates
We call Montana811 and wait for existing lines to be marked. You tell us about private lines.
- Trench
We dig to depth along the route, keeping sewer grade where it matters.
- Bed, lay and inspect
Pipe goes in on bedding, connections are made, and any required inspection happens with the trench open.
- Backfill
We fill and compact in lifts and leave the surface ready for restoration.
Utilities, Locates and Frost Depth
Call before you dig. Montana law requires a Montana811 locate before excavation. The utilities mark their lines, and we dig carefully near the marks. The 811 locates don't cover private lines on your side of the meter, like a well line, a line to a hot tub or buried power to a shop. If you know where those are, tell us.
Below frost. Western Montana winters freeze the ground deep. A water line that's too shallow will freeze. We dig to the depth required for your line and area, which your plumber or the local utility can confirm.
Bedding. Pipe shouldn't sit on rock or clods. We bed it in suitable material so it's supported along its length and not pinched by stones when the trench settles.
Sewer grade. Sewer lines work by gravity. The trench has to fall steadily from the house to the main or tank, with no low spots where solids collect. We check grade as we dig.
Tie-ins. Connecting to a city main or public water system usually involves the utility and a permit. Your plumber typically makes the connection. We dig the pit, keep it safe to work in and backfill when everything's approved.
Backfill. Dirt dumped back into a trench all at once will settle for years. We compact in lifts so the yard stays level.
What Affects the Cost
Length of the run
More trench means more digging, pipe bedding and backfill.
Depth
Deeper trenches move more dirt and may need wider cuts.
Rock and ground
Rock, roots and wet ground slow the machine down.
Surface restoration
Digging through lawn, landscaping or a driveway adds cleanup and repair.
Tie-in requirements
Connections to public mains can add permit and coordination steps.
Season
Frozen ground and snow change what's practical.

Do you do the plumbing connections?
We handle the excavation, bedding and backfill. Your plumber usually makes the pipe connections, and we work alongside them on the same schedule.
Can you replace a sewer line that keeps backing up?
Yes. We dig out the old line and trench in a new one at proper grade. If it runs to a septic tank, we'll look at the whole system while we're there.
Can you work in winter?
It depends on frost, snow and access. Call and we'll tell you what's realistic.
Can you run lines while you dig the foundation?
Yes, and it saves a mobilization. Ask about pairing it with foundation excavation, or contact us for a free estimate.
